Melanie Gill continues her exploration of the developmental path to psychopathy as seen through DMM attachment theory and the DMM’s scientific assessments. This week the family ‘crucible’ will be examined in depth.
Last month Melanie described how traditional models describing psychopathy tend to offer a limited approach. The newer Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP) offers a fairly comprehensive and multipart assessment which examines six domains. Attachment is one of the domains, but of course the authors have limited experience with understanding and applying attachment principles. Melanie has developed a DMM-attachment approach to understanding psychopathy, informed by the CAPP and other psychological and biopsychosocial models.
The quiet panic
One of Melanie’s key findings is this: Psychopathy, and pre-psychopathy in children, involves a catastrophic attachment event (CAE) which is ignored within the family as life goes on.
In this session, Melanie’s second on the topic at DMM Coffee House, she will go into further detail about necessary attachment-related components which seem to always underlie the development of psychopathic tendencies, and provide examples to demonstrate her findings.
