Cognitive and affective DMM self-protective attachment strategies demonstrate opposite facets of the same aspect. Blaming the self vs other is one example. In this session we will explore which emotions are commonly seen when danger looms large, and how the DMM A and C attachment patterns handle each emotion differently.

Mark Baumann will facilitate a discussion, and will start with some of his thoughts about the difference between shame and humiliation. DMM Attachment science, as reflected in Crittenen and Landini’s Assessing Adult Attachment: A dynamic-maturational approach to discourse analysis (the yellow book), clearly identifies that A patterns involve a sensitivity to shame. Shame is an emotion always associated with A patterns in the book, however there are no equivalent findings for C patterns. This raises the question: is shame a facet (one side) of an aspect, and if so, what is the aspect, and what is the opposite presentation in C patterns? Here’s an article by Mark about shame and humiliation.

What do you think about the shame vs humiliation argument? How do you define the two? What emotions do you tend to see cluster in A or C patterns. Who are your favorite emotion researchers and theorists.

Join us, let’s get emotional!
