DMM Coffee House #76: Assessing basic DMM strategies in a police bodycam case

Applying DMM attachment theory in a dangerous real world case with Dr. Mike Blows.

October 1, 2021 by CSI

19 October 2021. Dr. Mike Blows will show us police bodycam footage from a famous U.K. case, and we will work through with DMM-attachment assessment techniques to see what DMM self-protective strategies we can identify.

The video footage is from a stop by police of a man who had escaped from prison. We will watch and learn the man’s techniques as he attempts to fool the police again. We’ll use DMM discourse analysis techniques and attachment behaviors to assess the incident. This will be an good opportunity for people knew to the DMM to further their understanding, and for experienced DMM practitioners to deepen their knowledge with a real world example.

Self-protective attachment strategies, as described by the Dynamic Maturational Model of Attachment and Adaptation are designed to protect oneself from danger. We previously used DMM coding techniques to look at bodycam footage in the Gabby Petitio and Brian Laundrie case, with interesting results. This time, we will look for self-protective strategies in the situation of a escaped convict being addressed by a law enforcement officer who is unaware of who he is speaking with. Self-protective strategies should be on full display in such a situation, so we will see if they are apparent and how we might learn to see past them and not be fooled. We’ll see if the officer is able to see past them ,and if so, how he does it.
